A Guide to Solar Systems

Everything you need to know about installing Solar Systems on the Sunshine Coast!

Powering Sunshine Coast towards a clean energy future!

In recent years, solar energy has become increasingly popular as a renewable energy source. Solar panels are now more affordable than ever, and government incentives make it a no-brainer for many Sunshine Coast homeowners and business owners to go solar.

What are solar systems?

There are many different types of solar systems. The most common type is a photovoltaic system, which uses solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity. Solar panels are made up of many smaller units called cells. When light hits a cell, it causes electrons to flow and generates electricity. Other types of solar systems include solar hot water systems, which use the sun’s energy to heat water for home or business use, and passive solar systems, which use the sun’s energy to heat buildings without using mechanical equipment.

How Solar Systems Work

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are installed on your roof and convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then sent to an inverter which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the kind of electricity used in your home.

The AC electricity is sent to your home’s electrical panel or breaker box. From there, it flows through your home’s wiring to outlets, switches, and appliances. Any excess electricity not used by your home is sent back to the utility grid through what’s called a “net metering” connection.

Solar System Types

There are three main types of solar power systems: grid-tied, off-grid, and hybrid.

Grid-Tied: A grid-tied system is the most common type of solar system. It is connected to the utility grid and produces electricity that can be used to offset your energy consumption. Any excess electricity produced by the system is fed back into the grid for others to use.

Off-Grid: An off-grid system is not connected to the utility grid and requires battery backup. This type of system is typically used in remote locations where connecting to the grid is not practical. For example, the batteries store excess electricity produced by the system to provide power at night or during a power outage.

Hybrid: A hybrid system combines a grid-tied and off-grid system. It includes a battery backup for when the power goes out, but it also can sell excess electricity back to the grid. This type of system is ideal for those who want the peace of mind that comes with battery backup while still being able to take advantage of net metering programs.

Benefits of Solar Systems for your Home or Business

1. Save Money on Your Energy Bills

One of the most obvious benefits of going solar is that it can save you money on your energy bills. Solar systems allow you to generate your own electricity, which means you’ll be less reliant on your utility company. In some cases, you may even be able to sell excess electricity back to the grid.

2. Increase the Value of Your Home

Another great benefit of solar systems is that they can increase the value of your home. For example, a recent study found that homes with solar systems sell 20% faster and for 17% more money than homes without them. So if you’re considering selling your home in the near future, going solar is a great way to boost its value.

3. Help the Environment

Of course, one of the best reasons to go solar is because it’s good for the environment. Solar energy is a renewable resource that won’t run out as fossil fuels will. Solar systems don’t produce emissions, so they don’t contribute to air pollution or climate change.
